great grandfather was a Doctor and a Master Mason.
His title, Master Mason, suggests he may have lead the membership of a Masonic Lodge. I learned from comments on various mailing lists about individuals who's ancestors were Masons, and from them gleaned a germ of an idea that Masonic records could yield genealogical information.
